Community impact
Strong community bonds are vital to an institution’s scientific success. Fermilab, as a local community partner, works to enhance the quality of life for residents. Recent Fermilab community impact initiatives include:
- Neutrino Day
- An annual event hosted by the Sanford Underground Research Facility to celebrate science in Lead.
- The 2025 event attracted 2,300 attendees.
- Public lectures
- Lectures from scientists to describe the physics behind the Deep Underground Neutrino experiment.
- Community meetings
- Regular meetings attended by hundreds of Lead residents.
- Meetings cover a range of topics, including engineering milestones for LBNF and the science behind DUNE.
- Community improvement projects
- Sidewalk repair at Manuel Brothers Park.
- Skate park resurfacing.
- Crosswalk installation on Main Street.
The lab also sponsors events that enrich the Lead community. Recent events were organized by the Lead Area Chamber of Commerce, Homestake Opera House and the Lead Beautification Committee.
